The Master Scratchbuilders: Their Aircraft Models & Techniques (Schiffer Military History)

Plastic Scale Modeling - Advanced Techniques
John Alcorn's latest book is primarily aimed at those who wish to scratch build their models and it provides a wealth of practical information and photographs to aid the builder in that quest. There are articles about the models and detailed discussions techniques involved in building, along with a large number of photographs and drawings which clearly illustrate those techniques. The photographs are clear, well captioned and most are in color. Each of the these articles profiles and demonstrates the completed (and in process) models of a number of the best known and most accomplished scratch building modelers in the world at this time. It also provides at least two in depth articles which will benefit any scale modeler--Model Research and Photography and Finishing. These two topics alone justify any modeler buying this book and if used in assembling you modeling effort. I personally believe I could have saved much of the personal efforts I have made over the last 35 years in developing my skills, tools and techniques by having had, read and studied this book. As a dedicated, though not highly skilled, modeler, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, applaud John Alcorn's efforts and highly recommend this book to anyone seriously interested in scale modeling.

The Pull of the Earth

Author: Alfred Alcorn

Not very uplifting, but definately worth reading!
I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked this book up at a used book store. I had never read anything by this author and it is his first book so I was slightly apprehensive.

I shouldn't have been. The author slowly brings you in to the world of these characters who are well developed and complex. The relationship between Janet and Lucien was almost excruciating for me to read because it was so real to me. The author perfectly describes how you can get involved with a person who you know you shouldn't. How you can convince yourself the person has changed or wasn't as bad as you thought and then the progression of how you then see reality, of who you are and who they are.

Do not read it if you are depressed at all because this book will do nothing to lift your spirits but it will make you think.

Also, this book is definately sexual. If that sort of thing offends you, do not read it.

Scratch Built!: A Celebration of the Static Scale Airplane Modellers Craft
Published in Paperback by Schiffer Publishing, Ltd. (May, 1993)
Authors: John Alcorn, George Lee, and Peter Cooke
Average review score:

Inspiring and well-illustrated.
The photos in this book show what is possible in the art of model airplane building. After looking through the book you may be tempted (as I was) to throw away all your model planes because the chances are they aren't anywhere near the quality of the ones in this book. But that's what the book is for, to improve the readers skill by showing what is possible. If you build model planes, this book is very worthwhile.

Deadline

Get Real!
This book took me a while to get into...but it's also taken me longer to forget. On the one hand, Alcorn paints a more realistic view of life than Christian novels often do; on the other hand, it dives deeply into thought-provoking--sometimes contrived--discourse. I appreciated the transformation of the characters through the story, and found myself looking forward to more in the next book, "Dominion." Alcorn seeks to deliver a message through his fiction, and he succeeds. At times, the story takes a backseat to the message, but he manages to gather the plot threads back together before they fray into thinly veiled sermons. For any readers put off by this book's length, try Alcorn's "Edge of Eternity." It's a shorter, powerful allegory of the road to Jesus, a modern Pilgrim's Progress, except this time the Pilgrim isn't quite sure where he's headed. Don't try to read "Deadline" with any deadlines--spend time with it and absorb it. It might seep deeper than you think.

Incrdibly important issues are addressed in this book.
I have read 4 of Randy Alcorns books and enjoyed them all but DEADLINE was my favorite. He very wonderfully talks about issues that we face today in an America of the politically correct; the New Age America (even though it was published in '94). The story line is actually quite incidental to the great truths he presents. The main character is an opinion columnist for a local newspaper so he (Randy) has a perfect opportunity to give great teachings, great arguements if you will, against the new age philosophies of today as you read the column Jake, the main character, is writing for the day. I'd give my eye teeth to see articles like these in the newpaper but I think they will only be seen in fiction novels! He is a huge fan of and is incredibly influenced by and imitates the writings of C.S. Lewis. LORD FOULGRIN'S LETTERS is a modern day version of C.S. Lewis's SCREWTAPE LETTERS. He owns up to this fact without apology in the introduction. He is also, obviously, a John Bunyan fan because his book EDGE OF ETERNITY is a modern day PILGRIM'S PROGRESS. I enjoyed that book very much as well. It is full of great spiritual truths.

Best novel I've ever read in one can't-put-it-down session!
THE Perfect gift for your pastor or any other christian leader. If you like Peretti's books you will find that Deadline! surpasses anything you've read by a Christian author. Randy Alcorn, best known for his non-fiction pro-life appologetics, has written a masterful suspense novel which he uses as a frame work to expose Planned Parenthood and media bias toward the anti-life abortionist's viewpoint. Mr. Alcorn also manages to show how the media and educators have helped to distort America's views toward 'tolerence' and away from truth. The book also has the most vivid and beautiful word picture of the after-life which has been written since St. Paul put down his pen. This book will make you think - don't start reading this one at night if you have to go to work the next morning because you will not be able to put it down until you reach the nerve-tingling ending

Lord Foulgrin's Letters
Published in Paperback by Multnomah Publishers Inc. (September, 2001)
Author: Randy Alcorn
Average review score:

An interesting homage to C S Lewis
I really enjoyed this book. Of course the concept has been "borrowed" from CS Lewis' "The Screwtape Letters". (But the author freely admits this.) But it is a nice tribute to the Screwtape Letters because it is finely written, and engaging. In fact, once I started reading it, I literally could not put it down. I think the real strength of the book is the way that Alcorn shifts settings back and forth from one chapter to the next between the spiritual realm and the material realm. The important theme of this is that the spirit world is as real as the world in which we live, and influences it as well. In a day of scientific materialism, which denies anything spiritual(and this attitude exists in the church, too) Alcorn's book is an important, as well as thought provoking, reminder, that spiritual warfare is real. Thanks Randy, for writing this book.

"Screwtape" for the new millenium
I originally had no intention of buying this book, first because it looked like a blatant rip-off of C.S. Lewis' classic "The Screwtape Letters", and second because I was not too crazy about a previous novel written by this author. After looking at the book in a Christian bookstore, I saw it was in a little different format than "Screwtape", plus it was a very attractive book to look at, so I took the bait. And, Randy Alcorn, if you're reading this review, I repent of my previous attitude, because this book is a winner in every way.

Unlike "Screwtape", "Lord Foulgrin's Letters" alternates between the correspondence from Foulgrin to his apprentice demon, Squaltaint, and the earthly activities of Jordan Fletcher, the human to which Squaltaint has been assigned. In the beginning, I wondered why someone as spiritually bankrupt as Jordan Fletcher even needed his own personal tempter (I guess that's why an underling was assigned the job), but soon enough, despite Squaltaint's best efforts and Foulgrin's best advice, Jordan begins to move toward a greater spiritual awareness, thanks to the witness of one of the friends with whom he plays basketball regularly. In Foulgrin's correspondence, the author covers all the bases as far as the tricks of the devil are concerned. In giving a glimpse into the spiritual realm, the book reminds me a little bit of Frank Peretti's novels. But the practicality of this book makes it far more valuable than your average work of fiction, for it increases awareness of the traps that Satan's henchmen can put in one's path. Plus, there are some interesting twists at the end. All in all, a stellar effort.

Know Your Enemy!
"Lord Foulgrin's Letters" is one of the most engaging books I have ever read. From the moment I started reading it, I did not want to put this book down.

Lord Foulgrin is a upper-level manager in charge of a few demons, including the demon who has been assigned to Jordan Fletcher, Squaltaint. Lord Foulgrin has written letters to Squaltaint, instructing him on how best to keep Fletcher firmly in their service and not the Enemy's (God) serivce. These letters have now fallen into human hands and have been put together in this book for all to read.

Based on C.S. Lewis' popular "Screwtape Letters" book, there are two major differences. First, this book is nowhere near as difficult to read as STL was. Secondly, before we read each letter we are treated to a snippet of the life of Jordan Fletcher and his family. This make for a much more entertaining and compelling book.

As you read this book, you will find many similarities between your life and Jordan Fletcher's life. In addition, you will often feel like the letters from Lord Foulgrin are about your own life. The letters will make you think and review your own life to see how the demonic enemies have directed you off the path.

One of the best fiction books of all times, you should have it as part of your collection.

ProLife Answers to Pro-Choice Arguments

Disproves the pro-death rhetoric with facts, reason, history
WOW! This book is amazing. It's an updated and greatly expanded version of the classic edition. Randy Alcorn gives a thorough refutation of 39 common arguments we hear from the pro-abortion side. Alcorn demonstrates that scientific evidence AND reason is on the Pro-Life side (this book does NOT base its arguments on religion!). No wonder pro-abort people hate this book. Yes, the author is male. But what's right and wrong does not depend upon your sex. And yes, it is very much other people's business if someone has an abortion because an innocent HUMAN LIFE is at stake, and that ought to concern everybody, male or female, pregnant or not, involved or not involved in a similar situation. I suggest you buy several copies of this book to give to others.

Shocked at how little I thought I knew about abortion!
Randy Alcorn's book answered so many questions that I, even as a pro-life person didn't know the answers to. It equipped me to at least be able to defend what I believe in an intelligent way.For example I didn't know that abortion is legal at any stage of a pregnancy. I thought they would only do it in the first trimester. I liked the way the information was presented in a non-religious,non-denominational way.As a Christian I am saddened that most pro-choicers think all people opposed to abortion are religious fanatics. I'm not so sure I agreed with the part that birth control pills cause the death of a fertilized ovum. The "pill" suppresses ovulation thus,no egg,no conception. I was also surprised to learn that the pro-choice/abortion movement is a million dollar business! Of course they don't want to show the other side of the story to a pregnant women.

In Light of Eternity: Perspectives on Heaven
Published in Hardcover by Waterbrook Press (December, 1999)
Author: Randy Alcorn
Average review score:

How can you describe the indescribable?
If the book follows the exerpts then I would have to say it's not very intellectually stimulating with new ideas. In trying to describe the indescribable, the author equates heaven with things we know of this life and makes it appear very boring. The Bible says that 'we cannot even conceive what heaven will be like'. Heaven is a 'spirit' world of 'immortal beings' - nothing like we've ever seen. Give me a sci-fi book any day that portrays supposedly impossible themes and then you get my interest.

A PREVIEW OF HEAVEN
AWESOME BOOK. AS CLOSE TO EXPERIENCING HEAVEN I MAY HAVE THIS SIDE OF HEAVEN. DON'T MISS IT . RANDY HAS AN AWESOME IMAGINATION (BASED ON SCRIPTURE) . YOU WILL THINK HE HAS BEEN THERE! DON'T MISS IT, CHRISTIAN. I AM READING MINE FOR THE SECOND TIME AND IT'S EVEN BETTER THIS TIME!

Required Reading
Alcorn collects from his novels many of his intriguing comments and portraits of heaven-- then explains and defends his ideas. The result is so biblically sound, so rationally compelling and emotionally moving, that I sell these books at a loss at my church and office, give them as prizes to my students, and shamelessly quote from it in my own sermons and lectures. In Light of Eternity is one of those compact little bombs that occasionally explode in our lives, after which we are never the same. At least I hope I will never be the same. I may never live up to my own hopes and fervent desires, kindled by this book and others like it (Desiring God by Joh Piper comes to mind), but for the rest of my earthly life, I bend all my will to that end. This is "pure spiritual milk" for those who want to nurture in themselves an apostolic heart.

Dominion

Hard to get into, but worth staying with.
I had read Alcorn's DEADLINE and could not put it down. This novel was difficult to get into and seemed a little "preachy" at first. Clarence had a major chip on his shoulder, which annoyed me at times, but I must admit that it made me think about the racism (subtle and otherwise) that still exists in America. If you look at reading this book as an educational experience, Alcorn's forays into history and politics, and his occasional sermonizing won't be so distracting. I'm grateful for the things it opened my eyes to, but I think the "Reader's Digest Condensed Version" would be a better read.

Breathtaking!
I love to read christian fiction and having never heard of Randy Alcorn, I decided to pick it up and read the cover. It intrigued me and I went on to buy it. While reading this book I kept telling everyone about this "great new black christian author". I was so very surprised to find out that Randy Alcorn was not black. He captured the life and trials of the African-American experience so well. It was so real for me that I felt everything the characters were feeling. The portholes of heaven were great in imagining all those gone on before us that are now "so great a cloud of witnesses".

Hard to put down....a great read!
This is the second book that I have read by Randy Alcorn. As was the case with his first book, And Eternity, I could not put it down. The book focuses on racial and spiritual matters. It challenged me rethink my outlook on racial issues and concerns. The author provided characters who were real and alive. The characters are actively seeking out truth and justice for their community. Christian beliefs and principles are questioned and brought into focus for the reader. Mr. Alcorn has the ability to demonstrate his Christian beliefs and show his love for Jesus. I recommend this book highly.

The Ishbane Conspiracy
Published in Digital by Multnomah Publishers Inc. ()
Authors: Angela Alcorn, Karina Alcorn, and Randy Alcorn
Average review score:

Good, but could be better
This was a great book; the down to earth characters faced real problems such as dating, drugs, friends, sex, eating disorders, and personal will power. They face these problems as most teenagers would. Religion to me should not be taught yet a belief that manifests in your soul. The Christianity aspect of the book was often pushed from character to character in ways that would not be expected through the age group.
Mental demons trying to force "evil" onto people was a way of looking at what causes many tragedies in ones life. The blame is being set onto another without the thought of a god being to blame. The “lord” as it is referred to in the novel is different for each character, much as it is for people all over the world.
The dark sides of the novel (Lord Foulgrin’s and Prince Ishbane’s letters) distract the reader from the lessons learned by the characters. The frequency of these letters is also distracting. It may have been better to cut the total number in half.
I believe this book has an underling good message to the reader, yet getting to that message may be a little difficult.

Good book for Teens to Read!
I am an avid fan of Randy Alcorn and his books. I enjoy the way he makes the reader aware of the eternal consequences of each and every action taken here on earth. I found the Ishbane Conspiracy to be a cross between Lord Foulgrin's Letters and an interesting story of a group of teenagers gaining their "rites of passage" into adulthood. The Isbane Conspiracy is, in part, a continuation of Alcorn's previous novel, Lord Foulgrin's Letters, and the members of the same Fletcher family are the predominate characters of this book as well. The story centers around four young friends, two girls and two boys. Three of the friends are graduating from High School and one boy is already in his first year of college. The four friends must come to terms with the influences of dating, drugs, alcohol, sex and the occult as they make daily choices between the fulfillment that these things provide versus the fullfillment from Christ and doing things God's way.

Although I enjoyed the story very much, I started getting very irritated by the interruptions in the story when the two demons, Lord Foulgrin and Prince Ishbane, would speak. Each time the story got interesting, these two demons would interrupt the plot and start discussing their strategies and plans for getting the teenagers to do bad things instead of good things. This approach worked well in Lord Foulgrin's letters, however once you get the point (and it doesn't take long), it really becomes annoying (especially to Christians!) to experience the constant interruptions in dialog to listen to the plots of these demons.

I guinelly hope these "Foulgrin and Ishbane" conversations do not become a trademark of Alcorn's future novels. If so, Alcorn should make two versions of his novels - One version, with the demon conversations and one without, especially for the more mature reader. If these irritating conversations had not been included, I would have given the novel 5 stars instead of 4 stars.

Overall, the Ishbane Conspiracy takes a contemporary and fresh look at the battles that teenagers face each day and remind the reader that without a strong grounding in the Lord, they are subject to- and prime candidates for- the influences of all that is evil.

The sequal to Lord Foulgrin's Letters
Like most of the books that Randy Alcorn writes, this was an excellent read. It made me really think about spiritual warfare, and how there really is someone out there who wants to destroy me.

This book continues the story that began in Lord Foulgrin's Letters. It has now been about a year since Jordan Fletcher died in a car accident, and his hurting wife has been left without a husband, and his three children have been left without a father.

The Ishbane Conspiracy begins on January 1st. The main characters are Jordan Fletcher's daughter Jillian, Jillian's friend, Brittany, a guy named Ian, a guy named Rob, and the demons Foulgrin and Ishbane.

This is the story of Jillian, Rob, Brittany, and Ian's spiritual struggle to find what they are missing in their lives. As Jillian and Rob hold onto God and to eachother to try to stay true to their beliefs, you will be captivated. This is an AWSOME book! Try reading it...it could save your life.

So You Want to Be an Interpreter: An Introduction to Sign Language Interpreting
Published in Mass Market Paperback by H & H Publishers (01 April, 1995)
Authors: Janice H. Humphrey and Bob J. Alcorn
Average review score:

Good Book
I think this a good book for students on a college level graduate or undergraduate or even professional interpreters.
This book is explains and defines what an interpretures role is and how it is done. I've only read the book for a short time, but what I've read so far it makes sence what the authors are trying to bring forth. The book is written in simple english and said in such a way that it's easy to understand and to know where the authors are coming from. So I would suggest this book highly.

A must have for any interpreter (or interpreter to be)!
This book provides TONS of information about interpreting. The examples are a great way to really get into the mind set of all parties involved in an interpreting situation. While the book is pricey it is worth it. This is a reference text that you will use for years.

This is the Sign Language Interpreter's Bible
This book offers valuable information for anyone wishing to become a professional sign language interpreter. It include real-life tips on how to interpret in different situations (education, medical, theatrical). I still refer to my copy after 5 or so years of interpreting.
